What Car Tracker Is Best For Insurance?

In recent years, an increasing number of insurance providers have been requesting policyholders have a Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) affixed to the car. These devices are designed to allow drivers to always know where their vehicle is, acting as a deterrent for criminals.

Fitting a car tracker to your vehicle is incredibly quick and easy to do and can help you reduce your premiums. However, the market is packed with vehicle tracking devices, so which one is the best option for your insurance?

Types of insurance-approved car tracker

When it comes to insurance-approved vehicle trackers, many insurers place an emphasis on Thatcham-approved trackers. Thatcham’s is an independent non-profit that works with insurers, law enforcement, and manufacturers to help maintain and improve safety standards.

Since 2019, Thatcham has rated GPS tracking systems for cars in one of two categories, S5 or S7. Although occasionally some trackers still feature the previous ratings of either CAT 5, 6, or 7.

S5 Vehicle Tracker

An S5 tracker is the highest possible level and is only given to those Vehicle Tracking Systems that are the most secure. These devices not only provide incredibly accurate GPS data, but they also feature a wide range of additional features, such as being able to immobilise a vehicle that has been reported stolen as well as being able to alert police.

S7 Vehicle Tracker

The S7 is awarded to those devices that are slightly more affordable but still offer high levels of tracking. These types of tracker still feature a wide range of security features, such as location and driver ID, but might not feature as many features as an S5.
